My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James has recently branched out as a solo artist, releasing the greatly anticipated album “Regions of Light and Sound of God.” The thirty-four year-old Kentucky native’s record was released on February 5, 2013 with ATO Records after its announcement in November 2012. My Morning Jacket fans and J.J. newbies alike can enjoy this nine-song masterpiece. James combines soft vocals with powerful, assertive lyrics to master a jazzy-psychedelic sound, which sprouts from his time of self-reflection after his one-stage injury in late 2008. The depth and richness of his voice almost silences the piano and acoustic plucks heard behind the lyrics. Not slow, not too quick, “Regions” relaxed me without losing my attention, a feat almost unattainable through my perspective. While Pitchfork Media rated the album a 7.8 out of 10, I’d like to override that verdict and give it an 8.4. Truly fantastic execution, Mr. James, truly fantastic.
